Particularly Mallorca island receive every year the visit of 10 million tourists (focused mainly in the coastal zone) that is a ratio of 11:1 to the local population. The growing awareness of the risks associated with skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation over the past decades has led to increased use of sunscreen products which are introduced in the coastal waters via release from the skin during swimming and bathing or by indirect way via wastewater treatment plants. Despite this, knowledge of the ecological impact of sunscreen ingredients on the marine ecosystem have not been undertaken and their concentrations in the coastal environments have not been measured. Both, inorganic (titanium and zinc oxides) and organic compounds (benzophenone-3 and 4-methylbenzyledine camphor, among others), have been found in surface waters, wastewaters, soils and fish, and particularly the organic compounds have been suggested to be bioaccumulated in the chain food and potentially biomagnified. We propose to evaluate the effect of the chemicals released from sunscreen products on the coastal marine ecosystem of Mallorca island. The project includes the study of the different environmental compartment: coastal water, meadows of Posidonia oceanica and sediments. The proposed objectives include: i) the optimization and validation of analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of chemical products from sunscreen in seawaters, marine sediments and P. oceanica; ii) the assessment of the impact of the main chemical products released from sunscreen on waters, sediments and P. oceanica in the coastal of Mallorca island; and iii) the evaluation of the degradation, bioaccumulation and sedimentation rates of sunscreen in the sea.
