Seminar: Calibration improvement on coastal video monitoring systems

Coastal video monitoring systems allow the study of coastal morphodynamics over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales.


In order to obtain quantitative information from common camera images, it’s necessary to perform their calibration, in other words, know the relation between pixel image coordinates
to real world coordinates.


In order to obtain this relation (image world - real world) it’s necessary to know the positions [x, y ,z] of several ground control points recognizable in the images.


This way, the geometric distortion of the image can be performed and know the real world coordinates of all pixels (assuming one z value in real world).


If any of the cameras is displaced, the control points must be located again in the image.


In fact, it has been observed that in the same day can exist significant calibration variations. We propose a new calibration method that avoids manually searching for pixels.
